There is an old hot rodding adage that "90% of carburetor problems are ignition". Before spending a lot of time on the carb, I would suggest a complete study of the ignition system. My '70 GMC big block truck regularly got 14 mpg. If you were getting 5 before and after carb swaps I think your ignition needs some work.
