Post Re: 1 barrel rochester carb 1967 problem

In 1967 the power wire from the ignition switch was ballasted .

There's a bypass wire to the solenoid but that's not where the coil's power comes from when the engine is running .

Is it a stick shift or automatic ? .

Either way, get it up to 30 ~ 35 MPH in top gear and tromp the throttle ~ if it pings, back off the idle timing by one degree and try again .

If there's no ping leave it alone for now and get the engine fully warmed up and run it at 50 + MPH for at least one mile, that should help reduce the smoking, it may be burning out old caked up oil and carbon, it may be burning oil slipping past old piston rings or valve guides, we'll address that after you get the timing solved .

? Did you open the spark plug gaps up to .045" yet ? .

My old 1976 292 smoked and fouled spark plugs in about 200 miles of driving, I had to keep opening the plug gaps until the smoking stopped, then it flew through a SMOG test even though you could still smell the burned oil .

HEI allows you to have a good running engine in spite of oil burning, go slowly here and we'll get you sorted out .
