Great question, I'm not totally sure. I have to think it provides some noise reduction and insulation, but the real pony in this story is working AC.
It's still hanging in there, and was cheap. I'd probably do it again, and its surely better than nothing, and is not heavy like dyna mat type stuff (nor does it smell).
