After digging a while to see why the oil pan was leaking I found the answer.

There are multiple oil pans for the SBC and the original pan I had, had a 2-1/4 drop on the oil pan lip that goes around the timing cover. New pans have a 2-3/8 drop. The pan gasket I used was for the 2-1/4. Yep, that will cause a leak every time..... The part number for the pan that I ordered was supposed to be a replacement on a 72 SBC pan.

So for those wondering about there pans. Put a straight edge across the top side rails of the pan and measure to the bottom of the curve for the timing cover. If you are using the Felpro 1 piece gasket here are the part numbers depending on your pan. I would tell you to also add some RTV to the top and bottom of the curved seals.

2-1/4 Pan OS34509T or 1885
2-3/8 Pan OS34510T
