The process for opening the hood is to pull the hood release in the cab which allows the hood hinges and bumpers (if they're adjusted properly and not worn out) to pop the hood up an inch or two.

'67-'72 trucks also did not have an in cab hood release. I think you are thinking of the '73 up trucks for that.
