I have a 1988 XJ and we run it in "full time 4wd" all the time on/off pavement and we don't have any trouble like that at all. It had an old set of rock hard Michelins probably 20+ years old on it with hardly any wear on them at all. We finally had to replace them because they were so cracked that we could no longer get flats fixed.
The old Chevy solid axle 4wds will "cup" the front tires but nothing like you describe.
So I think you have something wrong
There's a really good "Jeep Cherokee Forum" out there so you should probably join and ask your question there as those guys know those things inside out and backwards.
Also, if your Jeep is lifted then you could have all sorts of problems. The Cherokee has a completely different sort of suspension with coil springs and control arms and trackbar.
