One of the 4-speed manual tranny's available in '67 was the SM-420 (changed to the SM-465 in '68 and on).

The 350 LT-1 was a great engine, and I believe it was used in GM's performance cars at the time.

In a 4X4 I like low end torque and grunt, the SM-420 has the granny-low 1st gear and works well for climbing/crawling up hills and through muddy / snowy terrain.

I've got an SM-420 behind my 383 Stroker simply because I don't have time to put in anything else and I know the old 4-speed can handle the torque from the 383.

If you really want low end grunt, put in a 292 with the granny 4. You'd just about be able to climb a brick wall with that set up.
