I think maybe the viewpoint should be, "new to the area, unfamiliar with the locals". Is the correct reaction to beat the living snot out of him and show him the regulars and veterans are complete arseholes that will jump on you if you post a relatively off-handed comment, or is the correct reaction to help him understand why he might have gotten the wrong idea?
