I wouldn't get too hung up on keeping a np203. np208's can be had for $150, and np205's for not much more if you look around a bit. From what I read of the np203, it's going to hurt your fuel economy a bit if using it as a daily driver.

The holy grail for ls-powered transfer cases is a np205(strong) or np241(lightweight) with passenger side drop and a vehicle speed sensor already installed. Only available in Blazers and Suburbans in 89?, 90, and 91.

What 4.8 engine are you planning to use? Gen 3 or 4? I'd caution away from doing a manual swap on a Gen 4. Should be quite doable(I hope!), but a bit more research.
