Got about 13k miles on the spaced out backing plates now. I actually forgot about it, have ment to do a better job of it. I used large nuts that I had laying around to space out the plates, so there is a air gap to the outside, but I live in the Seattle area, and have been back and forth to Nevada City, CA, 3 times and in the snow, etc, no problems. Still have my old axles, and still have 6 lug fronts, so may go back. The only reason I changed is because I got a vcople of 33" tires at the junkers, and they were mounted on 5 lug wheels, so I changed axles. I put in a 200R4 since then and am back to standard sized tires. I live next door to a pull-a-part, and what is not cheap I finagle somehow, Just put electric windows in my 68.
