i cleaned one of the chrome rims up for the most part with one of the brushes that you put in a drill and it did a good job of knocking the gnarly stuff off. the steel wool causing more issues is actually because of disimilar metals reacting with one another. in the navy we aren't really allowed to use brushes on aircraft due to the possibility of the metals reacting with one another and causing more corrosion then what was cleaned. but brass will work better than a steel brush. just make sure to wipe down the area after using a metal brush and use something to prevent the corrosion from reforming like clear paint.
