I did the same as da-burb except I just used black shelving paper. Same stuff you stick on kitchen shelves.
I got it at my local hardware store in a roll plenty long enough to do all the side trim.
Used an X-Acto knife and a light scribe over the vinyl to cut it to size.
It was a little time consuming but like da-burb, it's been 17 years and it still looks good.
