I use notifications for private messages only and I too noticed I haven't received email for them lately..
went to settings and found it was unchecked, maybe due to recent forum updates?
User CP (Control Panel) > Edit Options > Messaging & Notification > Private Messaging and look for;
The forum can send a message to your email address to inform you when someone sends you a private message.
make sure this is checked Receive Email Notification of New Private Messages
