Ask your driveshaft maker what the smallest length jackshaft he can build. That will determine your minimum length back from the tranny yoke. IIRC, a slipjoint jackshaft must be almost a foot long, but I'm no DS expert.

BTW, the size yokes/U-joints you use determines part of the minimum length.
