Surprisingly, its not painful so I have no idea when it acually started. From my research, I didnt have to "do" anything to have a detached retina. It is actually quite common in males, with near sited vision, over the age of 60.
How do you lay face down? Not comfortably, I assure you. I rented a masseuse style chair but it didn't work that well. Instead I sat in an arm chair and stacked pillows on my lap. I layed face down with a horse shoe shaped cushion to support my face.
I sucked it up for a week and was fortunate the doctor released my to be upright the following week.
