Before you can buy any internal parts you need to take it a part and see what needs to be done. How worn is the crank, will standard main bearing work or will it need turned? Now worn are the rods, will the rod journals need turned? How worn are the piston bores, will you need to get new pistons and rebore it? Figure the heads will need to be done too. It is going to be expensive not much demand for the parts so they get a premium for them. If you want to keep it a six cylinder to memorialize your grandfather I bet you can find a later model truck with good 292 for the price of the stock engine rebuild and gain more power a newer transmission and better geared rearend in the deal.

Just curious did the mechanics get it running any better as is?
