Steel needs to be clean too. there is a common mistake with welding steel and that is assuming it can be dirty. it is more forgiving than stainless or AL but that doesn't mean you should weld it dirty.

TIG the machine needs to have AC. there is a learning curve with AL. mostly it is patience. AL behaves differently with heat than ferrous metal.
