One item: you said, "and I got a
negative 10.5". That indicates you have polarity reversed--swap your pos and neg leads* to read
positive 10.5 v. Reading 10.5 volts indicates a partly-discharged battery: a charged battery should read 12 volts or above. **If you definitely have leads connected correctly, then some multimeters have a switch you can flip to reverse polarity.
