The glass ones like in the pic have another issue: the plastic filter medium is affected by the ethanol/alcohol additives present in most commercial gas. It swells -- causing a restriction.
So I prefer a steel can with a paper filter medium.
I use about the same placement as you have, but my fuel filter is about 4" higher that the manifold and stays cool enough there.

Darn, I JUST bought the thing!
Guess I'll use it for now, see how it does until I figure out what I want to put in it's place. Also gotta get it running good, and fix an exhaust leak. Thanks for the heads up guys. Not driving it a lot yet until I get these loose ends tied up so it'll do for now. any pics of better fuel filter that would fit in that spot?
