I'll throw it out there... I built my first 350 and thats where I went
.60 over
forged pistons
stock crank
stock rods
rpm heads
cam to match
air gap intake
Harland sharp roller rockers
not sure exactly on the carb yet
bmf I put together pretty much exactly that package in the late 90's for my truck. The RPM edelbrock package from cam to carb (heads, intake etc),,, used a clean 350 block I had, a cast GM crank, GM 'X' rods, and a set of old TRW L2304f pistons (the LT1 clones,, = 10.2 with a zero deck & 0.039 felpro gasket). I talked a lot with Scott Forte at Edelbrock about the package and be aware,, the 420HP the package made was a dyno queen 350 built specifically to peak the HP report. Scott would not divulge how long the motor lasted, or how many they went throu to make that 420HP. But he did say to expect an HONEST 380-390HP from the average build, which is very respectable. I never dyno'd the thing but time slips said that was pretty much in the HP range if I shifted in the 6800-7000rpm range. Then I got greedy and stuck a 250HP nitrous plate on it. Funny thing is that motor is still running today (minus the nitrous) in a buddy's 64 Nova bracket car. It's a well thought out package, just don't buy in to the advertised HP... it's just a number anyways.

No matter what you dream up, who's package you use,, look at putting the most STROKE into the combination and it will put the bigger smile on your face. If you have a 4" bore block,, I'd look at it as a 383 at a minimum,, and a 3.875" stroke will put you with a small block 396. How's that for cool.

(and ripdog,, you guys were just sitting around throwing me rope waiting for me to hang myself wern't ya,,, you knew eventually I'd admit there is a line where the big ol hunks of pig iron might actually be a good idea. <grins>
