The old panel sealer becomes dry and cracks and allows moisture (electrolyte) to stand between the spot welded panels (anode & cathode) creating a path for electrical current to flow thus causing galvanic corrosion. Same theory as a battery. Eventually the metal erodes away.
Look for leaves pine needles and dirt under the vent cowl, these trucks tend to rust out in the fresh air vent area too.
