For a squarebody it's in the model code, ie:

TK10903 = GMC, 4wd, 1/2 ton, lwb, reg cab pickup

CC20943 = Chevrolet, 2wd, 3/4 ton, lwb, crew cab pickup.

That does not seem to be the case for 67-71.

I think I figured it out Keith, post two. The "designations" in the VINs vs are about half different. They made things more difficult than they had to be, pre-1972. Perhaps whomever came up with the idea had previously worked for the government, or they had a future in it

FWW, here's a 1972 GMC decoder to add, next to a 1972 Chevy. Both follow the same logic.

With assys, the guide accts for 1000s details such as OEM identifications& part numbers, written in short order. 700+ images include assm, illust., charts, and points of interest. Much of the info. applies to all 67-72 GM trucks, and to a lessor degree all 67-72 GM vehicles. My build thread, and more on the guide https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=730025
