Sheet rock screws are kinda skinny. I used $$ exterior deck screws on the entire floors upstairs. I did that like 9? years ago and for the most part, our floors are still nearly squeak free.

I don't think I'd cut the carpet though, with the weird backing they use, once you slit that backing all the carpet fibers along the edge want to fall off or pull up.
