Code 45 problem
I have took this truck to 2 different shops and still have the same problem(as got worse).
1988 Chevy c1500, 305 TBI. Truck only as 189k miles on it and engine was rebuilt, but not sure when(be for i got it). Edit: truck is automatic with stock trans(engine is stock as far as i know). What truck does: Surges when stopped at red light. shacks/vibrates at idle. Idles around 500-600 when in park. Idles jumps around from 1k down to 500 rpm when stopped and in gear.(not all the time though). burns lots of fuel. acts like its bogging down when driving and some times when you floor it it really bogs down(like its flooded type bogging). Parts replaced/things done: ERG valve/solenoid spark plugs/wires, cap/rotor, coil. Map sensor, coolent temp. Rebuilt TBI fuel pump/filter 02 sensor (end of last year though for this part be for problems) Sprayed carb cleaner around intake/TBI and vac lines, had no change in idle. Checked timing- timing is correct, but every now and a then jumps light around(think cause of the bad idle). Injectors spray a coin and doesn't seem to be dripping. Even tried key on engine off to see if they drip. Fuel pressure was around 13, what last shop said(who knows they didn't fix the truck when it was there... so they might have guess..) Its a old truck and only a 305.. but it was my first truck and i still love it(even though i have a 07, i drive the 88 quite a bit). I hope some one can help me out, no one else as(shops). The shops? probably not since they just tossed parts in it at my expense, but i don't think a 88 305 as a IAT. Yes my buddy did a compression test on each cylinder, he was shocked how good the compression was. Just slight difference in a few. I was driving home today in it and it shut off twice and restarted (restarted cause truck was crushing at 55 mph when it shut off). There was just a few seconds between the first shutoff and second shutoff. After that it did not shut off anymore. |

Went out to start truck little bit ago and it would crank but would not fire. Pulled breather off and turned key watching injectors, they where spraying fuel. pulled number 1 plug wire off and put extra spark plug in the end, no fire. Pull coil wire off distributor and put spark plug in it to see if it was firing, no fire from coil.
Hooked all the spark plug wires back and played with the plugs on the coil and back of distributor.. She fired up.. Any ideas of where i should start tracing this problem? I'm guessing maybe the spark area as been the problem all along? |

Focus on the plug that you messed with on the distributor. Pull the connector and try tightening the pins for better contact. Or better yet, get a replacement connector.

Well i messed with all the connectors and the wiggled all the wires going into them, so not quite sure which was the cause. I'll mess with it some more when i get home from work.

messed around with truck today for a few minutes. First i unhooked 1 injector and truck idled real nice and smooth(I mean new truck nice and smooth). So i hooked it back up and unhooked the other, same result(just to make sure both injectors where operation the same).
All though one good thing i did find out is the that the TPS is shot, and i mean shot. Unhooked it and nothing changed. However I'm still positive that TPS is not causing this massive fuel feeding problem. |
