Seat in bed?
Anyone mounted a seat in their bed?, bench or buckets? Was thinking of welding in some mounting plates/bracketry and having a slide in/out set-up so the seat can be removed for hauling, etc.
Post a pic or two if you have done this. |

Re: Seat in bed?
Too long ago.
I think it was the 1980's... We used old school bus seats bolted down. Not very comfortable, but better than the spare. I'm assuming your local laws allow this? Some states outlawed riding in the bed, others will allow it but if they have seatbelt laws...

Re: Seat in bed?
I'd say get a seat out of the very rear of a suburban and use the mounts it already has, since its already removable it should save a little time.

Re: Seat in bed?
You can't even drive with your tailgate down in MN, I would be very surprised if the MN HP would allow people to ride in the bed, seatbelted or not.

Re: Seat in bed?
i got pulled over when my brother was in the bed, he was "loose cargo". they would have o have seatbelts. since its MN i woul dnot use a padded seat. go with the plastic seats like brats had so they could be imported as passenger cars and not trucks

Re: Seat in bed?
I live in the twin cities and on my old dodge truck I had I had a bench seat in the back facing the other way below a roll bar. I got pulled over when I had people sitting in the back and all the cop said was that I had to stay on residential streets and to drive safe, that's all he really said

Re: Seat in bed?
Some people think it gives you better mpg and less drag but the land speed racers proved that wrong, but no where in the MN statutes does it say you cant at least in MN. Now if you were hauling something in the back with it down AND whatever you were hauling wasnt properly secured, thats considered a loose load and is a violation.
It is legal to ride in the back of a pick-up at least in MN: http://www.iihs.org/laws/mapcargoareas.aspx While researching some options I found this set-up, pricey but sounds nice: http://trucks.about.com/od/truckacce...yder-seats.htm My old g20 van was more versatile than I gave it credit for lol. |

Re: Seat in bed?
If you bolt down a blazer or suburban rear seat with anchored seat belts and bolt down a camper shell, it shouldnt be a problem. Isnt that what a blazer has from the factory? Removeable shell, seat, and belts...

Re: Seat in bed?
No laws against it that I'm aware of, as a matter of fact there were little trucks made with seats in the back (out in the open) back in the 80's.
A blazer with a removable roof isn't any different. Take the roof off and like magic, you have a back seat in the bed A seat with a lap belt would be much safer than just riding in the back of a pickup and sitting on the floor, and I see people doing that all the time, even I've done it. I've never once been questioned about it. The places I've lived don't even require rear seat passengers to even wear a seatbelt... As far as the tailgate up or down law, that sounds like a load of bull, I'd doubt that it could be enforced unless you had a load of something that wasn't tied down properly. Otherwise it doesn't matter whether it's up or down or even completely removed. |

a Jimmy/Blazer came from the factory like that and it's open to the cab, a truck is not, meaning the two are joined... the bed has a few bolts the 3rd seat in a burb is supported from below, not just bolted to the floor.... play safe

Re: Seat in bed?
That's because you live in Canada, everything is backwards up there
Seriously though, the whole safety thing is getting old. Johnny Law has been pounding that in our heads for years now, I pay no attention anymore. Buckle this, helmet that, jungle jims aren't safe, everything has to be Disney Land, blah blah The things we did as kids growing up makes me laugh at the safety concious nowadays. Guess I just live dangerously |

Re: Seat in bed?
Motornut, Is it illegal to drive an early 80s Subaru Brat in Canada? They have seats in the back with belts. As far as "playing safe", A shortbed has 8 bolts holding the bed to the frame. Not a few. The back seat to my Blazer is attached to the floor not the frame. Pretty sure a suburban is the same. In CA if the seat is bolted down and you have a shell bolted down with bolted seat belts, its legal. I know a retired sheriff that has done it for his grandkids.

if they came from the "factory" seats and belts then it's ok ever seen a truck bed up here after a few years,?might as well be one bed bolt I never said the seat went to the frame,I said below,I guess call it some kind of support brace/plate under the floor, but it's not just bolted to the "floor" That fine for Cali....but not up here as i mentioned right off seems some other states don't like it either tho cops do what they want, and I sure won't stop them lol..... but there is a difference between a truck/bed and a jimmy/blazer, there is flex/gap between the cab and box but not in the jimmy You can get a safety with a hole in the bed of a pickup but not with the jimmy it's considered part of the cabin, same as a burb

Re: Seat in bed?
I cut the roof off a car,got pulled over a lot to check the belts
they were not moved from the factory spot so no arguement there was told if they were moved then it needs to be "inspected, certified" my 88 burbs third seat bolted to the floor with custom mounts, (even built with no belts 3rd row)wanted to put one in there"factory like" I had two trucks to remove it from but was told by my insurance "may not cover anyone hurt ,sitting in a seat "I" put in" but again this is in Canada not US
