help with a one piece oil pan gasket - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

i recently aquired a rebuilt 1989 350. im going to use a one piece oil pan gasket but there are 2 metal oil pan pieces that i have no idea what to do with. it looks like it would seal just fine without them. what do yall think?

If I am thinking correctly (need picts to be fer sure!) Those two pieces go down on top of the pan rail to keep the pan bolts from warping the flange and causing a leak, so YES you do need them unless you want a potential oil leak.

ill try to get yall some pics. the two pieces run the length of the pan on either sides and look like the two piece gaskets (accept they are 1/8 in thick metal).

Yeah, I know what they look like, they are there to keep equal pressure on the gasket as I stated above, the metal keeps the pan lip from warping if you over tighten the bolts which will cause a leak and or the gasket to split! Use it, there is no benefit to not using them so it is a little insurance to prevent a leak.

i totaly agree. i have even added them to every engine i've ever built that didin't have them originaly. the only exception to this might be an aluminum pan as the edge is allready thickened.
