Shorter Throws on Hurst Shifter

I have a saginaw 4 speed in my truck with a hurst compition plus shifter. I was told the shifter came out of a car that came with it from the factory. The shifter was for a consoul car eg 69 camaro, cutlass chevele ect. I had to seperitly buy my instilation kit from summit but the throws are unusewelly long compared to my freands witch are short. First of all why is this? is it because it is a factory shifter? and i''v been told to shorten them is to drill new holes o nthe tabs coming off the transmission. Is that corect? But i'v also been told that those tabs are harden steel so would it make a diference if i re fabed those tabs out of reguler steel so i could drill threw them? Thanks

Re: Shorter Throws on Hurst Shifter

I believe I have the same shifter as you. It was on a Saginaw and now a Muncie. I redrilled the holes in both sets of shift tabs on each transmission and it works great. I don't recall having any problems drilling new holes so I couldn't tell you if they are hardened or not. The biggest problem I have, which isn't much of a problem to me, is the shifter is very short, you kinda have to reach down for it. But the shift pattern is nice and quick. Hope this helps.

Re: Shorter Throws on Hurst Shifter

the shifter handle is held on by 2 bolts unbolt it and fabricate or buy a longer handle bolt that on to solve a short shifter handle problem
