Question about windshield gasket..(pic)

Decided to have a local window shop install my windows. Go to pick up the truck today and here's how it was done. The sealant is like this all the way around. Is there any reason for the sealant to be outside the gasket like this? The guy that installed it was off today so I asked the manager and he was telling me about frame flex, kinetic energy, weep holes and how it would look better with time and wear etc.. They will be redoing it. Just seeing if anyone has seen one look like this before.

Re: Question about windshield gasket..(pic)

Looks like mine, only neater. Mine was in windshield jail for almost a month. After claiming they could do it easily, they blamed me for not providing gasket/windshield/trim. Heck -they are the professionals, they should be able to source quality products. Said they tried every possible combination and couldn't get it installed. I thought I was going to get the truck back, sans glass. They finally said it's ready - with a really piss-poor version of RTV all-around inside and out. I paid just to get it out of there. I've had to patch their RTV job to stop recurring leaks. One of these days, I'll find a competent shop. I'd do it, but my body can't anymore.

It is wrong, however neat.

If sealant is used, it shouldn't be visible. The sealant is applied between the glass and the seal and then cleaned up to have a neat look to it.
Did hy use Silicone? that would be a big No No..

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Don't shoot the messager, Please. Doing quite a bit of research on here I came to the conclusion that GM had lots of problems with leaking windshields.

Sealing both sides of the gasket is necessary, both window to gasket, and gasket to metal. In most instances if not, IT WILL LEAK. There is tons of threads, pages long, on this subject. And that is just the tip of the iceberg on this site.

Extra on the outside does not look show quality but they did a neat job. Make sure they do the metal side also.

Just IMHO...

Re: Question about windshield gasket..(pic)

I've installed a bunch of these windshields, and I can tell you "that ain't right".

The only place I have had a problem with leaks is at the upper corners. I use a long nozzle and shoot sealant between the gasket and body metal about a foot across the top from the corner inward and 6-8 inched down from the top. The sealant isn't visible after install.

I never use any sealant until I see if the windshield leaks. Some do, some don't. A shop doesn't have the luxury of waiting to see.

No shop around here that has had an experience with these windshields will install one.

He said it's urethane, not sure exactly what brand. This is an expensive shop. I could see putting sealant on there like that if I did the install and it leaked or something, but for what I paid, I want it right. I just wanted to see if this was acceptable for any reason other than 'making sure it doesn't leak but looking terrible'.

Re: Question about windshield gasket..(pic)

Somewhere in the Service manual or Assembly manual it shows where to use sealant as davischevy said, only the upper corners. One of the problems is some seals are for the stainless trim and are different than without the trim. I know you don't have the trim, but are the rubber seals different for different years. I know the stainless trim for 69-70 is different than for 71-72. Are the non trim seals different also?

Re: Question about windshield gasket..(pic)

Watch this...No sealant should be necessary. An upper corner windshield leak is often mistaken for a compromised drip rail sealant bead located at each upper corner of the windshield. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOU_0HpS7To Watch a few videos and you'll get the idea. Once sealant is applied to these gaskets they're trash! Get your money back and either find a shop that knows what they're doing or tool up and do it yourself..."Jus Sayin"

Re: Question about windshield gasket..(pic)

The gasket without the stainless is relatively easy to install. I ordered a Precision brand seal and their hook tool and the plastic bars.

Get you money back, watch a couple of videos and get some small rope, a spray bottle of soapy water and get after it.

The satisfaction you get from installing your own will double your value.

Re: Question about windshield gasket..(pic)

This is a lost art. If it can’t be glued then they don’t know how to install.

"This"....what good does it do to put sealant on the glass, that's not where it leaks!

They put sealant in this area most likely if they know what I do. If its an aftermarket windshield, and new gasket the new windshield is most likely thinner than the opening the gasket is made for.

Ask Precision how we know this. It's the solution for a very common well known problem.

Re: Question about windshield gasket..(pic)

So Hey Precision, If you know the New Glass is thinner, please make a New Gasket to fit properly. Problem solved.

Thumbs up Re: Question about windshield gasket..(pic)

I installed my own 2 times since I owned it in 37 years I never have had to use sealent on either one.Mine has the SS trim also. Was it easy, no that's why nobody wants to do it. Take your time and use plenty of soapy water and a good string and some plastic knives and you will have no problems.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Looks good. I will definitely be doing it myself next time, hopefully a long long time from now. They made it better so I'm good for now.

Yes, problem lies between each manufacture making different thickness due to their formula for breakage and the raw material used.

Precision Gaskets are manufactured to OEM Spec, as close I can decifer through personal research.
