My possessed windshield wipers...

I have an '84 2wd SWB. EVERY TIME I turn the key on or start the truck, the wipers come on, wipe the window a couple times and shut off on their own.

Any ideas? Switch? or is there a relay?

Re: My possessed windshield wipers...

This is a common problem on the 84-91 columns.

Re: My possessed windshield wipers...

I have an '88 S15 that has a similar wiper issue; most of the time when using the blinker lever (right or left) the windshield wipers run a couple of cycles. Sometimes the wipers run after hitting a bump, or for no reason at all. Always just one or two wipes. I've learned to live with it, but am curious to know the cause.

Re: My possessed windshield wipers...

Is your truck equipped with the intermittent wipe feature? It works off a capacitor, and this behavior sounds typical of a capacitor building a charge when it's not supposed to...I hate proposing an idea without being more specific and having a solution, but comparing the condition of the switch circuit to a wiring diagram may reveal something grounding or that the intermittent switch isn't closing the circuit off (for the capacitor) when it should.

Re: My possessed windshield wipers...

My 83' did that for years, finally I replaced the motor assembly and that fixed it.

Re: My possessed windshield wipers...

The delay module is under the steering column a plug on each end with aluminum fins, "normally" this is the cause of the "fantom" wipe. Remove the plastic and metal plate below the column on the dash and you will see it. It slides onto tabs on the column.

Re: My possessed windshield wipers...

I had this problem on mine and a couple other Chevys. Wing windows let moisture in and and destroy the switch. So replace the switch and no more problem
