307 2 barrel Choke problem

Was looking around cant figure anything out. I dont like the fact that my tuck smokes the neighborhood out when starting it, plus louder than hell at choke Idle, its about 2.5k to 3k till i slap the thottle after a min or 2 dead summer 80+ and then i get normal idle. I disconnected the expanding heat coil mounted to the motor, could slap it down right away. I think that part is bad, but its always been a pain in the ass, could be alot more than that just havent really spent any time to fix it just been playing with it for a week or so. The machanic down the road just said to hell with it and put in a manual one, Dont know how to though, assuming not to hard? it has a divorced choke on it. any tips for converting maybe to manual choke or should i try to replace stuff? Runs real good after i get it to drop down. I rebuilt it awhile ago probably 2 years ago and the problem has just gotten worse over the last year, from what i remembered it used to not have a super high idle on choke.

Got pics?
Of your carb, both sides.
We might see an easy cure.

Re: 307 2 barrel Choke problem

Good pics!!
Is your choke pull off working? When you start the motor does the choke pull off open the choke blade enough to keep it from running rich. About 1/4 inch opening works.
Your high idle and normal idle are both on the same cam. You need to turn down the idle screw to reduce the cold high idle.
What rpm do you idle at now?
Will it kick off the high idle right away?

Re: 307 2 barrel Choke problem

I'm probably about 500 Rpm at idle warm. When i drive it and it kicks down and i brake super hard it almost kills. The Idle is as low as it can go. The high idle runs on the step up part of the low idle, when that piece spins. If i pin the throttle at about 3k, for about 2 seconds or 3 it will kick down right away. I think the linkage is all right. I dont know what the choke pull off is? Thanks for the reply

Re: 307 2 barrel Choke problem

THe choke pull off is that pot on the passenger side back. It uses manifold vacuum supplied by a small hose plugged into the back of the carb to pull the choke blade open when you start the motor. The choke blade opening amount is adjustable with that bent rod. If it runs rough and blows black smoke you need to open the choke blade further.

How high is the rpm when you first start it?

Re: 307 2 barrel Choke problem

I just noticed your carb base gasket isn't the right one. Should be about 1/2 inch thick. Your lowered carb effects your linkage on the choke stove. Makes your idle higher by putting the high idle screw up further on the cam.
You can put the right gasket in or put a bend in the link rod to make it shorter.

Re: 307 2 barrel Choke problem

O yeah, I totally forgot about that, Because when i did rebuild the carb when ever the new one had 4 holes, So when i went to turn it on it was sucking air though the 2 empty holes. I then stuck 2 bolts in it, Problem solved for the vacume leak, Thanks alot man! know where i can maybe get one the right size, I just got a carb kit and it had lots of different size stuff in it but not a gasket that big, I didnt even think of that when i rebuilt it. Thanks

Re: 307 2 barrel Choke problem

I'd try a new gasket.
Bending the rod isn't an exact science.
You could make a shorter rod from a wire coat hanger. I've made some that way.
Look for a gasket here.
