Re: Question about tires and wheels

255/40 and 295/40 would be my choice for tires.

Re: Question about tires and wheels

Lolife99. My rear end is a 72. I think the back space on the rear is 5 or 5.25 the front is 4.75 or 5. I'm waiting on replies on the drop spindles. Not sure what year the front is yet. 255/40 on the front and 295/40 on the back ?? I'll look up the item # for the wheels there on Ebay. If you have the time, I'd appreciate it if you'd take a look and give me the exact fitment I need. Rsally don't want to make a mistake on these. Thanks Pete

Item # 230726624458. I think that's a decent price shipped. I've looked around. Haven't seen anything in that style for the price. If you will tell me what I need back spacing. I will call them and see if they can hook me up. Thanks again

Re: Question about tires and wheels

sup Pete ! Haven't talked to you in a while..

Good choice on the wheels.. and you've got THE MAN helping you out on this .. He's all over it on the wheel / tire combo. I personally went 255/45 and 295/45 for my uncoming GMC slam'ola. (just personal taste, I like a little more sidewall and more 'stuffed' look) .. but I'm only doing 4.5-5" up front and 6" in the rear.

If you're doing 5.5" drop with 3" springs and 2.5" spindles up front, I would suggest 20x8.5 with 5.25 Backspacing (or even 5.5" depending on how you want it to look) 255/40.

5" drop in the rear, 295/40 on a 5.5" Backspacing - 72 rear end. It will measure 57" from backing plate to backing plate if you want to be sure . -- Afterall, I too learned from THE MAN lolife99

Have any pics of yours on the truck. Get an idea of how the higher sidewalls look?

Re: Question about tires and wheels

dont remember the backspace on my truck ,be that it was done sooo long ago..... imo i would revert to the stock ralley wheel offset and cheat a little to the inside for width/backspace....there's 22'' on my truck at the moment... and i have had all kinds of wheels on this.... 15 inch boyds then 17 inch welds then i thru these 22's on for the look....but im going back to the 15'' either weld draglites or corvette rallys once i put all the factory molding back on...

Re: Question about tires and wheels

Pete -- I just received my tires yesterday. Don't have my wheels just yet.

From what I can tell a 255/40 vs. 295/40 = 1.3" overall. (front tire vs. rear tire height)
255/40 = 28" tall. 295/40 = 29.3" tall.

The same combo in 45 series 255/45 = 29" 295/45 = 30.4"

So .. basically an extra .5" of sidewall top and bottom by going with the 45's. My truck will be driven a lot (this one.. not really a show truck) so I thought maybe the 45's would be better for potholes etc. I like to build the drop around the wheels and tires.. not 'fit' the wheels and tires to the drop if that makes sense?

Tires and wheels - bolted on the truck (or at least underneath it, with correct Backspace) Measure it as is, then measure where you want it .. and by the drop to make it happen. That's just the way I have done it in the past (when possible)

I'm going 4.5 / 6" drop (not really hauling anything to speak of) .. maybe 5" drop in the front (GMCPauls I believe it was has a 2.5" drop front spring + 2.5 spindles) Or snip 1/2 turn out if needed.. yadda yadda.

anyway, here are mine.

Per the ebay ad:
20x8.5" ARE 4.75" BACKSPACING OR ZERO OFFSET
20x10 ARE 5.5" BACKSPACING OR ZERO

The backspacing will work up front,...but I like a a 5.25"-5.50" backspace on 20x8.5 wheels, so they tuck.
The 4.75" BS will limitthe amount of drop you can do up front,... because the wheels will be close to the fender lip.

The rear 20x10's will work fine with a 5.5" BS and a 71-72 style rearend with your fleetside bed.

CC69Rat I applaud you for taking the time to buy the correct wheels, with the correct backspacing and tire size,... and to make the end results look GREAT,... not just "OK",... because "I got a great deal on the wheel/tire combo",... like so many do.

I do approach the measuring exactly opposite of the way you do.
I always set the ride height first. (static or bagged)
Then I measure for wheels.
It is so hard to calculate what "drop" the suspension companies products are going to give you,... until you install them.
Once I'm happy with the drop,... I buy wheels.
That's the only way I know to measure the size, and backspacing accurately.
That's just the way I do it.

As long as the end results are great,... I guess it doesn't really matter.

Like I always say,... measure, measure, measure!

Re: Question about tires and wheels

how about these lolife99 Think this might be the size you would reccommend

5 ON 5 CHEVY GMC TRUCK BOLT PATTERN

2) 20X8.5 = 5.25 BS
2) 20X10= 5.5 BS

Re: Question about tires and wheels

Why do you run the 295's in the back? Why not 245's all the way around?

Re: Question about tires and wheels

A 10" wide rim requires a wider tire.
(295 represents the width of the tire)

Look at Nate's truck.
It has 255/40's and 295/40's with 20x8.5's and 20x10's.

Re: Question about tires and wheels

Pete -- you know for sure you have the late rear end housing? Your truck being a 69, it sould have the early rear end in it. which would change the offset of your wheels slightly.

Ex. The early rear end is 55.5" plate to plate so you need 20x10 with 5" BS on the rear
the later rear end housing is 57" plate to plate so you would want 5.5" BS on the rear to offset it.

Re: Question about tires and wheels

That's about the onlly thing I do know about it. The year end housing has 1972 on it, in that yellow marker paint junkyards write on there parts with. Lol. I hope it is. I've already bought the wheels and goin with your idea's on the tires due to the terrain here.
