Cruise Control

I'm currently in the middle of restoring my Dad's old truck. It's a 72 cheyenne super swb with tach,tilt,ac and original black with parchment interior.

We'll use a 700r4 and a 96-99 vortec as the heart when we get to that point.

The question is, Have any of you fellas done cruise on these trucks? I'm open to any ideas.

BTW, this project is way beyond my talent or even my available time. Therefore I went to my favorite builder and he's giving me a deal on his labor. I caught him at a perfect time. He was needing some money to finish one of his own projects and was intrigued by this old beauty.

At this point, we've mocked up all our sheet metal and have it down to the frame and sand blasted. Cab and bed are on stands and we should be close to reassembling the chassis by the end of the week.

A big a** parts order is coming soon.

I sure appreciate all the info you fellas share on a daily basis. That's helped a ton when visualising the final truck.

I went with a 73 and up I think vacuum actuator system for mine. Found it on ebay cheap, never installed. It works fine. There are lots of different systems out there tho, do an internet search, you'll find all kinds, all kinds of prices.

Correct '72 Cruise control parts are very difficult to find, however if you are willing to live with a system that is very close to correct you can install a system for around $500. The '72 Cruise Master switch without the light (as shown in the photo) is very difficult to find but the 73 and later lighted Cruise Master switch is easier to find and the turn-signal switches are plentiful. The transducer, servo, throttle brackets can be purchased along with the vacuum-break on the brake switch. There are installation instructions as well as service manual pages available for reference during installation. I have many of the parts available and can help assemble a working system if you are interested. Below are a few photos of the cruise system on my 72. I will never own another 72-vintage truck without adding the cruise control system.

I went aftermarket. I bought an Audiovox universal system from JC Whitney for around $100 on sale. I mounted the switch knee-knocker style like the factory did. I use it all the time.

The cleanest install that I have ever seen was on a 62 Chevy Belair with a LS-6 Gen III engine and tranny. The owner used an aftermarket cruise unit from Dakota Digital and hooked directly to the computer outlet of the engine. If you are going to use the computer from the vortec engine, then you have the same basic support equipment, as he did.

mrein3, I have the Audiovox system also and remember talking with you probably 5 years ago on it....time sure does fly!. I spent a lot of time on it and never did get it working. I went thru the connections dozens of times, but obviously I have something wrong. The only thing I haven't tried yet is the driveline magnets instead of the coil hookup. I will add that to my winter project list. Knowing yours works gives me hope.

I do remember that.
You know, when I hooked up my Audiovox system, I had to call the factory to figure out how to set the dip switches in the control part of it. I re-read the instructions a bunch of times and still couldn't figure out what was what.

If you go with the magnets on the driveshaft, drop me a PM and I'll look at the settings of my switches. I think it should be the same since I'm using the magnets too.

i just decided to use a newer steering collum with the cruise/blinker/windshield wiper/and bright dim switch all on the blinker. the cruise control i use is a elec box off a 94 caprice cop car that just hooks up into wiring and has a simple cable to throttle.
