What all have you broken?

For those of you on a mission to make your C10 go faster and faster, what have you broken so far? I'm looking to twin turbo it soon and wondering what damage I will do to the stock drivetrain of my '71 SWB.

I'll start by saying that with my forged heads/cam 5.7 LS, I've broken a carrier bearing clean off and I believe that's what made my pinion seal start leaking, ruining a new set of 3.42 gears and maybe my Auburn posi.

Re: What all have you broken?

One thing that stays broke is my wallet!!!!
With that being said, a 550-600 HP big block will break a 700r4 transmission, ask me how I know...

Re: What all have you broken?

That's why I'm ditching my nice built 4L60E for a 4L80E. Rather have my weaker one alive and well instead of broken in the garage.

Did you break your 700R4 at the strip with slicks? I'm running ET Streets right now. I know they'll find the weak spot.

No drag strip or slicks, it's just a street truck with a set of 295 rear tires. Just some weekend cruising and a few occasional burnouts

Re: What all have you broken?

I would have a separate ride for racing but it's just too much fun surprising people in a shiny old truck that looks like all show and no go!

Re: What all have you broken?

Every time you put power out you will find the weak spots. You fix one then the next weakest then the next and so on.I used to have a pretty bad Chevelle. It came from right down the road from my shop. The little old lady lived down a nasty gravel road. Every time I would find a little more power, it looked like a gravel truck had thrown up on the drag strip. I would wash and wash but every time I made more power I would shake loose a whole nother set of dirt and gravel.
I had someone ask me about my car getting traction,[it would pull the front WAY up in the air] and I said "it will hook up in the gravel" I wasn't too far from wrong.

Re: What all have you broken?

My Blazer doesn't have anywhere near that kind of power, but I grenaded a gov-loc differential. My Z-28 has an Auburn posi in it, and it's much stronger. The only bad thing about the Auburn is that it's not rebuildable, so that might be a consideration for you.

Re: What all have you broken?

I haven't built anything extreme for a while, but when I do I build it not to break. The knowledge is out there on what can take what and what needs improvement to accommodate what. You plan the whole vehicle around intended outcome. Anything short of that and breakage will make your plans for you

Re: What all have you broken?

Blew up 2 T-5 trannys in my fox body mustang, 1 rear end in an 04 GT with a Kenne Belle, 2 axels in a 78 Bronco with a 351, and so far my C10 takes a beating and keeps on going.

Re: What all have you broken?

Turbo 5.3 here.

9" rear with 3.25's, posi couldn't take the torque. Grizzly Locker fixed that right up. Posi units have a power limit.

Junkyard 4L80E with Transgo HD2 shift kit installed by me. 2nd gear died quick. Rebuilt and been good to go since. Junkyard transmissions are always a gamble.

Control arms. The stock units started getting some weird bends from track launches. ECE arms, good to go.

I actually went to the track tonight, no traction AT ALL. It was a no prep street car night. Pedal'd my way to a lackluster 11.72@120.44. I was hoping for a good track and finally 10's from the turbo 5.3. Funny how with this truck I just wanted a cool, quick parts hauler. Now I want 10's!

Re: What all have you broken?

Spun a main bearing in my BB stepside years ago, mildly built. Just being young and dumb.. I can admit it.

Still running a 2 piece driveshaft? I guess I'll see how my 12 bolt holds up but I'll be ready to get that M9 I've been looking at.

Re: What all have you broken?

My 550hp 496 took my Eaton posi carrier out in under a 1000 miles and yes I did do the 500 mile break in. We will see how the second Eaton holds up lol

Short wheel base truck, so I've got a 3.5" diameter single driveshaft.

Re: What all have you broken?

I've got a short wheelbase too but still the 2 piece. Is the 2 piece weak? What does it take to go to a one piece?
