Another axle question or two

Yesterday evening I noticed some petroleum on my inner tire. Is there a way to tell if it's the axle seal or brake wheel cylinder without taking it apart? If it turns out that it's the axle seal, am I correct thinking that I will have to remove the axle shaft to replace it, therefore I will have to take the C-clip out in the differential?

Thanks!

Re: Another axle question or two

You could also inspect the master cyl reservoir to see if it's empty

Run your finger trough it and smell it. Both are distinct smells and texture.

Just like I taught my sons...."run your fingers through it" then smell it I hope the mods have a little "humor" this nite? All jokes out, yes the gear lube does have a very "skunk" odor. the brake fluid , has a stinky /sweet smell. Longhorn
