Best Way to Clean Upper Tailgate Brackets?
Hey All,
I was just wondering what everyone would suggest to clean up a set of the upper tailgate brackets off a 66 Suburban? Mine are a little rusty and kind of stick. Thanks |

You might try one of the homemade rust removal brews. They are talked about in the main '60-'66 forum. One of them is a vinegar and water mix. I haven't tried it yet, but it is supposed to work well.

I have always had great results with sandblasting. You end up with a smooth rust free surface.

I used lots of WD-40, or Super Tech spray Lube(Walmart version od WD-40), and one of those wire brushes that looks like a toothbrush, and steel wool. Keep them well oiled/lubed as they are irreplaceable!

My hinges are stiff as well .... to the point that they were starting to bent the gate.
So I removed them MONTHS ago, and have been soaking in wd40. I haven't revisited my project in a while, so hopefully they will be freed up by now Worse case, I might have to rehinge or rebush them. Sand/bead blasting is great for surface, but may get hinges gritty
