Looking at a 2000 3/4 need advise

Looked at a 2000 3/4 ton 2WD basically a low end truck with few options . 350 auto ac cruise with gray cloth interior . Truck is in nice shape just a little rust on the cab corners . Truck has 215k miles . I haven’t heard it run the owner wasn’t home . Talked to him over the phone said everything is in good working order only reason he isn’t driving it is it’s 2wd . Frame is spotless no oil leaks that I could see . Talked price he’s asking 7k that my main question I know nothing about the GMT800 trucks as to value so I have no idea if it high or not . I only snapped one picture of it .
If it’s out of line I’m not inclined to follow up on it .

Re: Looking at a 2000 3/4 need advise

Well.....
THose can be awesome, and give a person no issues...or
THe ABS setup on those is a pile....
THe vortec engine can have issues with the intake leaking coolant into the oil or just leaking everywhere

$7000 is too much, to me...

My thinking also on the price. Thinking 5k if it runs well

Re: Looking at a 2000 3/4 need advise

That's a GMT400. Last year, they called them Classics. It's been painted, so I wouldn't be so sure on the rust situation. How long has he owned it for him to realize he doesn't want a 2wd? He's asking 4wd price for it. He wants too much. The GMT400s are one of the best trucks GM ever built as far as longevity.

If it's got a G80 rear, they work really well in the snow.
4-5K seems like a fair price.

Re: Looking at a 2000 3/4 need advise

I have one of those with a service bed on it. Yep, a GMT 400 but with the Vortec motor. Over 350,000 on my truck. Replaced the spider in the FI and trans needs rebuilt again. Runs good. Think the 7k is pretty close to CA prices right now if truck is nice.

Re: Looking at a 2000 3/4 need advise

I agree with Tim on this one, my ‘98 k2500 has easily been the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. 210,000 with all of its original powertrain that has never been rebuilt. 100,000 of those have been pushing 35’s around. 7k is too much for a 2wd drive with those miles.

"I would even think about it at 5k" What you would pay and what the market is at are two different things.
"Did they still have that body in 2000?" Yes, as mentioned in the other post I have a 2000 GMT 400 based C2500. Chassis and body the same as my 94. Same more rounded dash as the 95.

Why do say it’s been repainted ? The drivers rear view was replaced at one point and is peeling. I didn’t see any evidence of tape lines or overspray in the jambs or under the hood .

Edit : I noticed the peeling and looked at the mirror it has those heat lines printed on it . Passenger side didn’t and the paint was good so I believe the truck didn’t come with heated mirrors

Just because it appeared that way with the grille and mirrors painted body color. I guess After '98 GM stopped putting a trim level badge on the B-pillar. You looked at it so go by what you saw. It sure appeared as repainted in the photo to me

Someone may have replaced the grill . I would need to look closer at it but I’m not calling him back . Way too rich for my blood and my BIL says it’s been for sale since august .

Re: Looking at a 2000 3/4 need advise

To me, "Only reason I'm selling it is because it's 2wd" raises the red flag to me. My question is, "Then why did you buy it?"

He has a newer 4x4 2500 Chevy it was in the driveway when I looked at the truck . He said his commuter car is a Toyota Tacoma . Think he bought the 2000 to tool around in summer guess now it’s buyers remorse because it sits all winter . And in NY you need to keep it insured if you still have the plates on it

Re: Looking at a 2000 3/4 need advise

My advice is to take the truck to a local mechanic and body shop that you trust and let them inspect the truck. Get a detailed report from both and then go on from there.
Yes it may cost a few hundred bucks but it can be money well spent.

No need I worked in a body shop for 12 years full time and then another 20 part time . I know what I’m looking at body wise . Been a grease monkey since I was 15 other uncle owned a car dealership .

So, the answer is he didn't consider the state law concerning insurance and registration. It's the same here with insurance and registration. Drop the insurance/turn in the tags. I guess he didn't realize everyone drives 4wd year 'round. Or, what I think, he's full of it. You asked and I gave my thoughts. Glad you're not buying it. If a seller can fib about one thing then what else are they hiding? That's all it takes for me to walk away, even at the right price
