Cool Finally 67 SS wheel done! Pics

Man this has taken me all day just about. I started at 3PM and just walked in the house at 12 midnight! It was a long process but it's in and working great. I ran into a little problem on the install and ended up tearing my whole wiring out of the thing just about.
Well I unplug the horn so I could get everything hooked up without blowing it every second I touched it. So I get everything done hook the ground backup and nothing....Dang! So I pull everything back off and double check it... everything seems OK.
So I put it all back and nothing again.

WTH... so I go and look at the horns them selves. They look good so I get my test light out and no power to the relay... They worked the last time I used them so I start looking. I looked under the dash under the hood and nothing seemed wrong. I have all the relays under my cold air intake so that all had to come out to get to them. So while I'm trying to figure this out I decide to try the head lights since they all feed off the same main power wire.

I finally checked the headlights.... dang no lights either! What the heck is going on here. So I finally traced it out and had put a 20amp fuse in line with the hot wire suppying my relays! Guess what, it was blowed!!

So I get the 20 amp fuse out and replace it with a new one. I'm hooking the relays back up and what do I do. I touched 2 of the wires and pop fuse blows again! Now I have a 30amp supplying the relays and everything is working and it's finally installed.
Sorry for such a long post but man it was driving me crazy trying to figure it out.

Anyway here you go.

I'll get a video of the chevy horns tomorrow.

It turned out pretty good I think. I'm not a painter that's something I have learned over the past years. But for painting it outside I think it came out fine. Man it's a big wheel! Lol but I like it.
Now to find a nice leather cover for it. Anybody have a suggestion on a place to get one.

Re: Finally 67 SS wheel done! Pics

great job andy that looks classy, I bought a steering wheel wrap at the dollar store awhile back not sure if they still have them but I also seen them at ollies if you have that store around It was the kind that has the long plastic/pcv string that goes around and around and around they were popular in the 70-80s I put it in my pontiac cause it just looked right

Thumbs up Re: Finally 67 SS wheel done! Pics

Thanks midniteblues,

That's what I had on the Corvette wheel. I'm going to look for a differant style this time. I have no idea if there is any differant styles but I'm going to look around.

NAPA carries a wheel cover similar to the one shown above in a larger size for our "big ole wheels. It was in their online catalog a few months ago.

Re: Finally 67 SS wheel done! Pics

That looks great! I'm a fan of car wheels in trucks. Many don't realize but the factory truck wheels are no bigger than most car wheels from back then, either. People must have started getting fatter in the '70s .
I've used those vinyl leather-look covers with the holes. I have one on my '72 that's been on that wheel since the '80s. Since wheels got fatter and cushioned you don't see these as available as years ago. But,at one time I had a leather cover and it had no holes. The lace was hidden, too. Hopefully someone still makes those.

Yea I remember those covers Tim. I want a nice cover over it without the lace showing. I have had both hands operated on for Corpal Tunnel so the bigger I can get it the better!

If you live in a town with a class 8 (ie.peterbilt, kenworth) dealer,go see the counterman and order a leather cover for a 16 in.wheel, you have several colors available. They are great looking ,they take a while to sew onto your wheel but is well worth it! sorry i don't remember the brand name. i have done 4 of these and I highly fecommend them @50$
