Project Dirty....76' 2wd GMC Jimmy

Well I'm finally getting to start on my 76'. I had this thing since November,But the birth of our 1st child really moved it to the back burner. Now that we have settled into a nice routine, I'm finding some time for the shop.

Its a 76' 2wd 327,M22 4-speed...The previous owner bought it from his uncle who spend a lot of time time in California with it ....He had a custom interior done in Mexico. Its honesty not bad, Dated but not bad. The nephew rebuilt the motor in 99', Hung new front chip sheet metal and let it sit for 10 years. Its a very solid truck by N.E Ohio standards. It needs some metal work, Nothing to hard. Its runs (Poorly) and moves...Its running on 10 year old gas.

The plan....Short term

It needs a full exhaust,Its got shorty block hugger headers on it now. I'm going to put long tubes on it. The motor as a cheap chrome oil pan and front cover. The drain plug is strip and leaks, same with the front cover. I have GM ones on the self. The carb needs work, along with the old gas pumped out of the tank. I'm going to pull the front clip to paint the inner fenders, wheel wells, core support. Since there isn't really any seat belts in it,Its only has half of the pass. side lap belt. I picked a set of late model truck seats and 3rd row Tahoe seats with the built in seat belts.

Then I'm just going to drive it for a while, I'm just in the mood to bang some gears this summer. I really don't care what it looks like.

Long term....Body work & paint, EFI, Maybe some handling improvements.

Well after that long wind post.....Here are some pics.

Project Dirty...

Re: Project Dirty....76' 2wd GMC Jimmy

I got some work done yesterday. The front clip is off, and I'm ready to start pulling the front of the motor apart to do the timing cover and pan....Its looking like my rebuilt 327 has a rattle can rebuild......And who paints a motor white!!!

I really need to spend some time organizing the shop. I'm starting to trip over things.

I had the throw the new seat in. I was worried about the rear floor in the 77' and later K5's not giving me leg room. Its just about perfect for me, Especially being a stick.

Re: Project Dirty....76' 2wd GMC Jimmy

Some update pics....

Repainted Motor.....

Header clearance....Or lack there of

Not sure what I'm going to do with them yet. I might rework them to pull/tilt up the collectors. Or go to cast manifolds. Don't know yet. I'm still toying with idea of raising the front a little.

I had to notch the header flange to clear the temp sensor.

More to come....

Glad to see some progress man. Motor looks good, but that is alot of red. Maybe needs a little black or silver to break it up? Just my thoughts. But glad to see the progress.
That seat looked good there too. What are you gonna do for material in it?

Yeah its a lot of Chevy orange....I will be ditching the fan when put the set of elec fans on it. I think the Alt looks funny being orange,I really should of strip it back to cast alum.

As far as the seats, I have a nice set of Yukon Denali 3 row for the back. If I can find matching leather skins for the front,I'll be styling.

Re: Project Dirty....76' 2wd GMC Jimmy

I really need to bump this thread.....Not much new work on the truck, I'm reworking the headers for better ground clearance. Also I was planning on redoing the static drop,But I started collecting parts to bag it.

Time to make some progress on this thing. But,This little guy keeps finding ways to get the lions share of my time.
