What do you guys think about this build???

Hey guys, I've been looking into starting a rebuild on my engine but I'm having a bit of a problem deciding in what direction I want to go in. I've been looking at budget builds online since being a college student I don't have much money to spend. I'm not looking to have the fastest truck ever just something i can drive around regularly and still be able to put my foot down and surprise some people. I found this build

http://www.classictrucks.com/tech/10...d/viewall.html

But i'm not sure how true it is, it seems really cheap for a significant amount of power. After reading other members budget builds they always end up way above the 1 grand mark and well into the 3's and 4's. I would appreciate any helpful insight on other builds you guys have done. thanks for all the help guys

To be honest... you couldn't pay me to use anything made by Procomp. Also the article is being generous with the $100 dollar price tag for a running 350 out of a bone yard. So the price at the end doesn't reflect your actual cost.

If you want a lowbuck engine... the 260hp GM crate engine is a steal... It's hard to rebuild an engine for under the price Jegs is offereing them for.

Throw on your carb and intake, distributor, etc... and off you go!

Sell your long block and buy the one from Jeggs, you'll save money and headaches plus you'll be on the road quicker

Re: What do you guys think about this build???

That does sound like a great idea, the only problem is that I don't usually have 1500 at one time. BRoke college student here tryin to survive off sandwiches and cereal haha. One of the main reasons I wanted to do a rebuild was because I could take my time and purchase new parts here and there. First thing is exploring different builds and which seems more logical and economically wise for my current budget.

So far I'm thinking a new set of heads and cam to go along with it for an easy simple build.

Re: What do you guys think about this build???

I'm in the same boat... Though I think I'm going this direction:

http://www.jegs.com/i/GM+Performance...30283/10002/-1

I've tried and tried to come up with a way that I can build a comparable engine for less and cannot do so...

If you do go the junkyard route, prices around here are $350 for an engine. I'd look for a 90's cargo van with less than 150,000 miles. Problem is, you have no idea how long this engine will last and, once you get a new water pump, timing chain, intake, carb and distributor on it you'll be pushing $500, or 1/3 the price of the engine Gary is suggesting. If you go this route, you might take some time to troll the yard for a decent intake, carb, and distributor and swap these out before you go pay for the engine. Otherwise, you can sell the FI setup and try to recoup some of your losses.

Good luck! Interested to hear what you end up doing. Perhaps I'll follow suit!

Re: What do you guys think about this build???

i can get a 350 from the pull-apart here because you pull ti your self, but i mean you can do a stock rebuild for 1k and that's with machine work and you putting it together your self.

i get my rebuild kits fromhttp://www.northernautoparts.com/Products.cfm?CategoryId=76

figure about 15 dollars a hole for boring to an over size piston, about 200-300 if you need a valve job if not replace the valve stem seals engine kits runn about 2-350 dollar depending on the options you get as for the crank i either always get a remaned crank for like 150 from the parts stores or let the machine check and tell you what size bearings your going to need but i recommend leting the machine shop check out what you have before ordering any parts. i built mine At school and used there machine shop and did it all by my self and still i had 1000 in parts but thast becasue i replaced everything rocker arms studs and push rods and vavles. personally i wish i had spent the 1500 on a jegs 350
