Keeping the straight six!

Hey guys, most people go for the 350s or big blocks in there trucks(not that theres anything wrong with that) but i want to be a little different. I have a lowered 68 and i havent seen very many with the original sixs in them. I guess there is a reason for them becasue im having trouble finding some parts for my 250. My question is how many people worked there 250s and what did you do?

PS. when i bought the truck it already had a clifford intake manifold, holly 390 carb, possibly cammed(previous owner didn't know), full exhaust and HEI ignition. Any help at all would be appreciated

There is nothing wrong with keeping your six 6 banger. The great things about these trucks is keeping their individuality. It's not what's under the hood that makes these trucks rock...It's thier design.

well im gonna figure out if it has a cam or not soon. just gotta see how much vaccum its pulling and see if a better tech can give me there opinon. im getting a 700r4 built for it now i wanna see how much the extra gears help it but im looking really for general parts cites for the inlines. I need to tear into it soon and im having trouble finding pistons/rings etc. Also im looking for a new valve cover, i think im gonna attempt to make one soon but i would like to see some others if i could.

Re: Keeping the straight six!

Check out Napa they can order anything you need it just takes a little work on their end to look up the parts. I've also seen rebuild kits on Ebay. I bought a kit last year from Napa with ring, rod and main bearings and full gasket kit for $160.00. Its not factory GM but everything fit like it was supposed to, and no issues as of yet but I haven't ran the motor yet so I cant report on durability. Just be sure to tear down first to make sure of the crank and bore measurements. Have fun!

Re: Keeping the straight six!

There are several threads on hopping up the 6.You may want to check them out, especially if you are about to rebuild.Swapping pistons can increase the comp ratio and add power.IIRC it's a 307 piston that fits or the ones for an LP conversion bring it up.

Cliffords and Langdons are two of the major suppliers of 6 cyl parts.

I think if I do it again I'd go with a I-6. The ones I've seen on here are just beautiful

Re: Keeping the straight six!

You've got the basics already covered on your 6. Another possibilty is porting the head. All of the above has been done to my 250, and I love it for being something different than the "I'm gonna yank out that 6 and put in a 350" crowd. Yeah, I could probably go faster easier with a 350, or any V8, but if I want to go fast, I just drive my Vette.

Re: Keeping the straight six!

If I had a choice between a L6 and a V-8, I would pick the L6. They are great little engines.

Many people have them in their trucks on this forum. I have one in a '67 swb stepper with the old 4 speed and really like driving it even it if is just plain as heck.

Re: Keeping the straight six!

Put a 292 in it, a lot of the 250 parts that you have will swap over to the bigger block, lot more torque and it will be unique...

Re: Keeping the straight six!

boo yah!! and another v8 swap bites the dust! lol good job on keeping the six, i got a 292 and love it.
i don't know if you got the 700r4 already if not. im told the 200r has a better spacing of gears that suits the inline 6's better, might be something you'll want to look into.

Re: Keeping the straight six!

I would have kept the straight 6 in my 67 c10 lwb but whoever owned it in the past yanked it out. So I got a good deal on a rebuild 350/350. Good Job keeping it Original.

Re: Keeping the straight six!

And straight 6's can be dressed up to look real good too. If you do a little search for N2BILLET you will find his 68 with a real nice 6. Air cleaner, valve cover, tappet covers, etc. One of the nicest looking inliners you'll find.
I've never been a 6 guy but I do like the stump pulling torque and great sound of one with a split manifold and twice pipes out the back. Sweeeet.
