You gotta do what ya gotta do.
Me and the misses decided to go to lake George for Americade. Had everything packed up . Luckily we needed gas when we went to leave her bike just clicked. Figure bad connection ,wasn't that . Good thing I carry one of those little hf jumpers. Got her home stator working correctly. So it needs a battery only problem is none to be found in the area.
Fast forward an hour I decided to take the lithium ion battery out of my Springer softtail and wire it up. To big for the battery box so I extended the wires and put it in the saddle bag. I'll buy a new correct battery up there for the bike. This battery weighs about pound and can be mounted in any configuration. So after a shower and her repacking her bag were hitting the road. I put some black tape over the positive terminals so it can't short out even though she just has clothes in the bag.

Worked out well . Bought the right battery and installed it there. Going to go into Massachusetts today. Get a bite at the Great Barrington brewery. First time in a few years we've had spectacular riding weather for Amercade and If it holds out we may just go to laconia for a couple of days. Camp in the white mountains.

It has been beautiful weather this week. I wish I could get up to Laconia. I have friends nearby as well as my riding buddy/brother-in-law in Sebago, ME. We are long overdue for this.

Little over 400 miles this weekend on the bikes. Even with sunscreen I'm burnt. Went from lake George into vt. Then down into mass to great Barrington. Stopped at bash bish falls headed down 42 to 23 over the Rip van winkle bridge threw Wyndham then stopped in Hunter ny big country festival going on there. Then over Peekamoose mountain and finally home

Sounds like fantastic riding.
Here's a necessity is the mother of invention story. At the end of a Carlisle Trucks show I had gotten all packed up in the August heat... finally. I was so ready to hop in my Jimmy diesel and feel the hiway breeze. I hop in to start and it just cranked... air in the fuel system. Either the base for the fuel filter/water separator was cracked or an o-ring was bad. I was about the last vendor on the grounds. Hardly any tools and no parts, what to do? I knew if I pushed on the filter it was fine. I looked around and PERFECT! A 1/2 full gallon milk jug. It wedged it in there tight and put a stick through the jug handle to keep it from vibrating loose and slipping down. Bled the air out and i was good to go... for a couple weeks. Turns out that part was discontinued and it took a while to come up with parts and fittings to create my own fuel filter/bleeder. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do

My best story on this sort of thing was in 2004 when a friend came in and we put a new carb onto my '75 Pontiac. We fired her up and took off down the road. She did fine getting to the lake (down a steep hill) but about 2/3 up the other side she lost power and quit. Luckily I was able to pull off the road right there. (KUDOS to the locals, several cars stopped to check on us).
Battery had died so restarting wasn't an option. Dad came with jumper cables and got us going again. On the drive back she wouldn't run long enough to get up the other hill. Finally, we realized the choke needed to be held on so with hood raised, my friend RODE on the passenger inner fender, holding the choke closed (or open, not a carb man!) I had to drive about 2 miles with hood up, friend riding on engine bay, my head out the window to see. Later, my friend said, "I was terrified something would happen and you'd slam on your brakes, sending me flying." I just wish I had video. |
