what goes between the wheel tubs and the wood bed

i have a oak bed on my 67 4x4, well i took my wheel tubs out last night in the bed cause i want to put somthing between them like silicon? but i want the right stuff. On my dads 71 cheyenne super with the original wood bed that is in perfect shape has somthing between them that kinda oozed out. well i hope someone can help me thanks

I have had trouble with silicone; it is not paintable. I use a polysulfide caulking because it remains slightly flexible, is watertight, and can be painted. GL, Bob
