What is this called?

I noticed how bad off the wires were when I installed my oil pressure gauge last weekend. The condition it is in can't be healthy for the ignition. I want to replace it, bit I don't know what it is called.

I will replace the rotor and cap as well. Do you see anything else I should replace?

Re: What is this called?

Looks like an ignition module and condensor. The modules can be tested at most parts stores.

Yup, that's what it is. I know many people keep a spare in the glove box in case it fails. If it does, you get no fire. I have only had that happen twice in my GM ownership lifetime, both times on my C20 and within days of each other. I think both times an iffy charging system contributed to the problem. It hasn't happened since I cleaned the alternator system up and installed a 10 SI.

Re: What is this called?

While you are thinking about rotor, cap, condenser, etc, why not do a HEI conversion?

I mean no disrespect MidLifer but it is an HEI. Points distributors don't have a module like that....

turp23, in the second picture I see some crud in the distributor, just blow it out with compressed air & make sure the advance weights move freely. You can also check to see if the vaccum canister is working properly by hooking a vaccum pump up to it.

Re: What is this called?

it may be more cost effective to replace the whole distributer with an aftermarket one by time you get the module cap roter and coil

Re: What is this called?

When you buy your new module and capacitor, do not buy the cheapest one in your market. Buy good ignition parts and you will never regret it.

This is what you need

Pertronix D9007 Flame-Throwe r4-Pin Wire... Pertronix D9007 Flame-Throwe r4-Pin Wire...
Along with a new module and a pick up coil. You may find a whole distributor ready to go for the same money as the parts needed.

There may be other suppliers also.

Re: What is this called?

I should have ordered a whole new distributor. Only reason I didn't was because I was scared of having to restab the dizzy. I had to take the old one out to rebuild it anyway.

Anyhoo, what's with all the springs, the kit came with 5 sets. I only need 2. Which ones do I use? Just pick the ones that match the old ones?

Can I clean the inside of the dizzy with carb cleaner to get the gunk out?

Re: What is this called?

Use Lectramotive or similar ignition/electrical contact cleaner. The springs are of different strength. The lighter the spring the faster it advances. Usually you put lighter springs and heavier weights to improve performance

The springs control how the advance rate of the distributor, for ignition timing.

The heavier the spring (silver ones in your case) will slow down how quickly (RPM wise) the timing goes to full advance.

The lighter the spring (gold ones it appears in your case) the more quickly (RPM wise) the timing goes to full advance.

If you were happy with your vehicle's performance before the problems, go with the springs that seem to be the closest match to your old ones.
