I have to replace the ring and pinion in a K-20 front axle since I changed the rear from a 4.56 to a 4.10. Is the front a 4.10 exactly also or is there a slight difference in ratio ( say 4.09) to keep the front axle pulling a little more to keep the truck going in a straight line when it is slippery???
Where on- line does anyone show the ring and pinion set up procedure for a Dana 44?
I am a Machinist and understand the process and feel I can accomplish the task.
Any info is highly regarded.

4.09, 4.10, and 4.11 rear and front ends will all work together, since there is enough drivetrain slack, tire slippage, etc to make them virtually the same ratio.

Yea I believe people just cling to 4.10 and 4.56, I believe the eaton rear is actually a 4.57 and my dana44(GMC) front has 4.09 gears. Now I believe you can have 4.09 gears and 4.11 gears in a dana 44, which brings up the next question: where is the carrier break for a dana 44? And which gears are used for with each carrier. i.e are 4.09 gears/carrier used w/ lower gears (say 4.56) and the 4.11s with higher gears like 3.73 because the carrier is different?

As far as setting up the gears I understand the big thing w/ the dana44 is the diff bearings are pressed on and might have to be removed/installed several times to get the gears adjusted correctly. I do not have the procedure but you can check over at www.coloradok5.com I believe it is posted in the tech section.

I think 3.92 and higher numbers,ie 4.09 411 and so on are the same carrier.Anything under is a different carrier.

I did some research and it is 3.92 (like smokekiki said) and higher(4.10) also 4.09 and 4.10 is available just the ring gear is thicker than the other. This was out of the Reider Racing catalog.

just use the same shims that are already there. unless the pinion shim is spun, you will be just fine. are you selling the 4.56's?

Find a site or Tech article that explains how to change the gears and how to set the "Backlash" up.. If you don't do it right you'll blow the gears.

There are books that describe it, and I remember seeing a set that someone put together that had everything in it to do the install. ALong with a VCR that showed it.. It's been a few years ago, but I'm sure someone still sells it.

It's not hard, It can be time consuming, installing and removing the gears until they are set up right...

I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed.
