Question Vortech Heads

I was thinking about using them and I have a few questions. Are vortech Heads something you can get from the junkyard? If so what cars/trucks would they be on? I know the intake manifold is different, but will the same lifters, exhaust manifolds, etc work? and last, if I could get a set of used ones, would it be a bad idea to put them on my old 350 without rebuilding it?

they come on 96-98 trucks with 350s.. so finding them in the junkyard might be a little hard

They are pretty inexpensive from any gm performance parts dealer. Plus you don't have to worry about worn valve guides or getting a valve job, or anything else associated with buying used heads.

You will also need some self aligning rocker arms to go allong with that setup

Your manifold/haders will bolt right on. You'll need new center bolt valve covers, new style intake gaskets, and the aformentioned intake manifold. The self aligning rockers can be omited for some hardened pushrods and guide plates.
Your cam selection is limited onless you are willing to replace the springs, I think it was .420 lifft, that or .480...I can not remember at the moment. Call a cam company, they will set you up with exactly what you need.
I wouldn't even bother with junk yards on this...and I'm a cheap b@stard.
As for new heads on an old engine, it all depends on how old you are talking about, and how hard you'll be pushing it. If you have 100K on the clock, I wouldn't even think of it. (not again anyways)
However, if you have 50,000 or so, I think i would yank it, inspect real close, and take it from there.

I've got Vortechs on my 350. Stock they can handle up to .470" lift, I had my valve guides cut down .100" anticipating a bigger cam than I actually ended up with. This would have allowed for .570". (Not that I actually considered that much lobe......) The cam I ended up with was CompCams Extreme Energy 262H. .460" intake, .469 Exhaust.
Duration at .050" is 218/224. with this cam, Edelbrock Performer manifold, ceramacoat headers, HEI ignition, and 750 cfm Edelbrock, I dynoed at 380 horsepower at 4800 rpm, and 445 ft/lbs torque at 3800 rpm. Torque stays over 400 ft/lbs from 2800 to 5500 rpm. Great street motor, used lower RPM range manifold because of my 3.07 rearend gears. This engine idles fine at 600 rpm, and I run it on 89 octane fuel. Hope this helps.
