Hauling cab in back of truck - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I might be picking up a cab. I am sure somebody here has hauled a cab in the back of one of our trucks. Any tricks to it? Anything to be careful about? Will the cab sit in the bed okay or do I need to have wood for it to set on.

I have hauled several that way. My experience isthat you have to be carefull of the heater box. If you leave it on the cab you will have to block up the cab to keep from breaking it. WES www.ClassicHeartbeat.com

Yup, I sure will!

If the cab is a fixer upper, just toss it in. You can see my steering shaft was taken apart, but the upper section we still there. It put a small dent in the top of my bed rail there. My heater box was destroied in the accident, so I'll agree with WES being I don't know, and he is the man.

I never put any 2X4's or anything in there, just tossed it in...actually, my friends did it for me, I had just messed up my back.
I strapped mine down being I was going from central Texas up to central Ohio, and the truck was on a tow bar behinde a 20 foot moving van, and I was unable to keep an eye on it, but I am SURE it was not going to jump out.

Just for the info, I hauled an 81 cab from Fresno to Pittsburgh in the back of a long bed 72. The best thing we did was air arc the frame ahead and behind the cab, leaving the rest attached to the cab. Then we set it on a pallet and used a forklift to set it in the bed. Steering shaft was out, and it happened to be a non-air cab. Clearance was not a problem. Hope to bring a 72 cab in a 72 truck in the fall. Got a few comments about the cab and the truck, and that it was the best place to put the women on a long trip.
