who here has painted their hotwheels? i got some paint and i wanna try it but i was wondering if you guys taped off the wheels, grill, windows and undercarrige? or is there a way to take the body off? thanks in advance

ITS EASY YOU ADRILL ,DRILL OUT THE TWO RIVETS ON BUTTOM IT COMES APART . YOU CAN PAINT THE SEATS DASH ETC, THEN IF YOU WAHT TAKE A JONNY LIGHTING CAR WITH RUBBER WHEELS DRILL THE RVETS TAKE THE RUBBER WHEELS PUT ON THE HOT WHEEL . PAINT THE GRILL . IVE DONE A COUPLE LOOK GREAT. USE J B WELD TO PUT EVERY THING TOGETHER.

I just taped mine off, but you can brill...I mean drill... the rivets out.

Rats! Beat me to it. I just picked up a pair of Hot Wheel trucks the other day to do what you did with the one on the left. Good work! I'll post a pic when I get around to mucking with it.

Hey Guys....thanks for the kind words. Customizing Hot Wheels is my hobby when its too cold to work out in the shop during the winter.

XXL - Get ready to wear-out a new Dremel tool......tons of cutting and grinding to get one of these dudes down this low.

71_ShortStep - the bed cover is made from a piece of .010 black anodized aluminum shim stock.

NSANE68!! - thanks bro!

Super Chevy - the paint is Dupont ChromaBase urethane base coat/clear coat. It is 1995-96 Corvette Blue, then followed by some House of Kolor Clear with Mother of Pearl dry pearl powder mixed in with the clear. You really can't see the pearl in the pics, but it really stands out in person. After clearing, I wet sanded with 1500 and then hand rubbed. I can only wish my REAL truck turns out this slick....LOL!

Here is the truck before paint....in primer.

And Yes it still rolls....

I'm setting it aside for now but in my copious free time (yeah right), I may shave the handles and side marker lights. And if I get particularly bold, I may try chopping the roof... though I'm not sure how well this pot metal can be bonded back together.

Oh, and grill is not installed and the window dropped down just before the pics because it was just sitting in there and not tacked in in any way.

Use JB Weld to bond the pot metal back together....you can then even file and sand it like bondo....

I was gonna cut the wheels down so I wouldnt have to cut the bed, but wanted the w-i-i-de tires in the back.

Looks good XXL........Excellent Job!!

Heres one moving on up the scale of difficulty....LOL

Chopped top and lowered. The top was cut into 6 different pieces before being "JB Welded" back together.
