700r4 tranny questions (I have searched the board)

Everyone,
I have studied the boards trying to learn all I can about this. I have a few unanswered questions. I want to put 700r4 into my 1/2 ton lwb 4wd truck. I bought a tranny from a local guy where i live, he didnt know much about it. Turns out it is made in 83, from what I have read, not the most desireable year I know. It also has a tail shaft on it with a mechanical speedo connector on it. I think that means it was originally in a 2wd? Can it still work for my application? Also, I think I need to buy an adaptor to marry the tranny and trans together? Is that correct? I know advanced adaptors sells one. Currently it has a TH350 in it. If I do add the adaptor, does that move everything back in the drivetrain? So will I have to change the crossmember holding the transfer case back? Also, will it move the shifter for the transfer case back and how far? Will it still fit through the current hole in the cab floor? I have also read that the yoke may be different on the transfer case or transmission 27 spline vs 30? Not sure about that one.

I am no concerned about the throttle control cable adjustment and all that yet, just the basics on if this trans will work for me.

Is there any way to test it to make sure it works before I go through the hassle to install it? The guy said it worked but you never know, he did seem a bit shady.

I have read the sections in the FAQ and studied all the links there also and dont have clear answers to these questions. Any other insight is appreciated as well.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Re: 700r4 tranny questions (I have searched the board)

If you have a th350 in a 4x4, you already have the th350 to NP205 adapter.

A company called Advanced Adapters makes an output shaft for the 700r4 that when installed in your 700r4 is the correct length and spline count for the adapter you already own.

In a 2wd 700r4 like a 2wd th350, the output to the speedo is in the tail. You don't need the tail as the back of the th350 and 700r4 case in front of the tail is the same. The output to the speedo comes out of the NP205 which you won't be changing out.

Your drive train stays in place. Your engine has to move forward 1 7/8" as that is the difference in length between the two cases. By moving the engine your t-case shifter stays in place and your driveshafts are the correct length.

Research the Advanced Adapters website, find the part number for "700r4 in place of th350 output shaft", and type that part number in at Summit. They are a bit cheaper there than from AA.

Re: 700r4 tranny questions (I have searched the board)

How do I move the engine forward 1 7/8"? From what I can see I would have to move the engine crossmember forward due to the oil pan clearance? Is this correct?
