i have a question about my carb on my 72 gmc k2500. ok well it runs fin intell you realy gun it and open all 4 barrels then its stuk at wide open throttle, so i have to shut it off and manualy close carb. now i have the stock quadrajet. so should i just get a rebuild kit and rebuild it, or would this be a good time to just get a new carb. the truck is pretty much just a goof around truck mostly in the mudd. its a stock 350 with an Edelbrock intack. so what carb would i get if i did get one. thanks

Just buy Cliff Ruggles book on Q-Jets and rebuild it!!!

The Q-Jet is the best non-racing carb ever built! They did a test in four wheeler mag a while back and rated it best off road carb!!! Won't flood out and die on sharp angles....AND it works great from inline 6's to 500 HP BBC's.

DON'T MAKE A MISTAKE AND BUY ANYTHING ELSE...UNLESS YOU PLAN ON RACING!!!!

I would just find out what is sticking the throttle open and fix that.

I agree with above posts. If it's the original stock carb and hasn't been messed with it could be a sticky butterfly shaft.

I found out that the best thing on these carbs is to remove it from the engine so you can see how everything works in relation to throttle response, choke operation and fully open throttle.

They have a lot of small links and cranks. As you can see by this pick... This is a newer model but should be basically the same.

thanks guys, i will probably just wait intill, the jan when my school starts agian, im in mechanic school, and then just rebuild it in class.

Just saw that you're in CO.......Look up Lars Grimsrud on the net, he's in Longmont I think. He's one of the Corvette GURU's of the world...Maybe he'll build it for you for a decent price.

you do have a throttle return spring installed right??

// i'd start by looking real close at the geometry of the throttle cable .unhooking it and checking the cable first for binding or possible fraying or a kink of the cable strands then going to the actual carb linkage with throttle cable unhooked

well my grandpa and I figured it out, the return spring was worn out and not pulling it back far enough to close the butterfly valve. Put a new one on and it works fine. Leave it up to the wisdom of grandpas what would we do without them. thanks guys for all the help.
