power steering box

i am going to put power steering on my truck
when i turn my power steering box by hand it feels kind stiff and a little gritty, compared to my manual box witch spins easy and feels smooth.
what should a power steering box feel like and will mine be fine?

thanx pat

Re: power steering box

it should be easier than your manual box. It may have air in it or not enough fluid or its bad along with the pump

Re: power steering box

It will be very hard to turn without having fluid going to it. But it should not feel gritty. If you are very careful, you can take that top cover off. Just try not to move the adjusting screw, and if you do, count the turns and put it right back where it was. That way you can inspect the inside and see what is causing it to feel gritty. Flush it out with some clean PS fluid and reseal the top. Hook up the hoses and give it a spin!

Good luck!
